Bish Sanyal is the Ford Professor of Urban Development and Planning. He previously served as chair of the MIT Faculty from 2007-2009 and head of the MIT Department of Urban Studies and Planning (DUSP) from 1994-2002. He is also head of DUSP's Special Program in Urban and Regional Studies (SPURS). Trained as an architect planner at IIT Kharagpur and the University of Kansas, he holds a PhD in urban and regional planning from UCLA. Prof. Sanyal has worked as a planning consultant to the Ford Foundation, World Bank, and International Labour Organization, as well as other international organizations. His research and teaching interests include institutions and politics of the informal sector, planning theory, and education.
