MIT Deans Announce New Institute for Data, Systems, and Society

MIT will launch the Institute for Data, Systems, and Society (IDSS) on July 1 (MIT News, 04/08/15). Under the leadership of Prof. Munther Dahleh, the institute will connect researchers working in the mathematical, behavioral, and empirical sciences to address complex societal problems.

IDSS will incorporate faculty from the Engineering Systems Division (ESD) and a number of existing units, including the Laboratory for Information and Decision Systems (LIDS) and the Sociotechnical Systems Research Center (SSRC). IDSS will also be home to a new MIT center for statistics.

Prof. Dahleh is building the IDSS leadership team, which is designing an undergraduate minor in statistics and planning a new PhD program grounded in analytical tools and social sciences.

The Ford-MIT Alliance is seeking ideas for new research projects to begin between January and March 2016. Project ideas are requested in nine areas.
